Going Deep in the Satir Model:The Spiritual Domain of the Satir Process Model presented by John Banmen, R.Psych, RMFT (CEC) PLENARY
What if the Satir Model is built on a spiritual foundation? What would it look like?
What would we need to change in our daily practice to manifest such a perspective?
What signs did Virginia Satir leave us with indicating that her teachings were based on consciousness, which she called the 4th birth. Why then so much emphasis on the 3rd birth? Tune in to the IHLRN conference to see and hear what John Banmen, an old student of Virginia Satir, has to say about all this and more.
Awakening & Strengthening Our Spiritual Gifts presented by Mary Jo Bulbrook, RN, EdD
Tips and Tools to Engage, Enhance and Empower You to Deal with Life Challenges.
This experiential workshop is about turning on and turning up your inherited gifts of spiritual and intuitive insights to guide, direct and empower you. The pandemic crisis has impacted all of us to "look inside, find direction and walk a new path". To achieve this mission, three questions will be addressed which are related to the "fourth birth" hinted at by Virginia in 1979: How to awaken and strengthen my spiritual gifts? How can I find and fulfill my life purpose? How can I experience calling on my spiritual – intuitive guides? The goal of this workshop is to climb out of an enclosed box of self-doubt, energetic blocks, and experience where to go next, what to do next and how to get there.Workshop experiences include: awakening and strengthening my spiritual gifts through drawing pictures, identifying my blocks to growth and how to get to a new place through healing strategies to open and strengthen resilience.
Heal Yourself, Heal the Planet: The Blame Disease, Icebergs and Climate Change presented by Janet Christie-Seely, Doctor of Medicine, Master of Surgery (CEC)
Janet will discuss how the Satir Model and Reconstructions can transform an individual star’s perspective on their family of origin and personal development. She will reference her book, Heal Yourself, Heal the Planet: The Blame Disease, Icebergs and Climate Change as well as her experience as a Satir practitioner. Janet has led many family reconstructions where the star’s understanding of family dynamics, their own iceberg, freedoms and resources has transformed them. Their personal transformations have awakened them to how they might contribute to positive change greater than themselves.
Satir and the Sand Tray: The Iceberg, The Body, and The Metaphor presented by Madeleine De Little, Ph.D (CEC)
Virginia Satir knew how metaphors can access new ways of perceiving and experiencing elements of an individual’s iceberg. This presentation will show how placing figurines in a sand tray can resonate with unconscious patterns of energy. As language is added, the client can make new meanings of their experiences. The presentation will show how to ask iceberg process questions of the metaphors in the sand tray, not the client. Current neuroscience supports what Virginia Satir knew intuitively, in particular, the therapeutic relationship.
Apply the Satir Model in Organizational Contexts presented by George Dinwiddie and Joanne Perold
In this workshop we will sculpt some ways we have used Virginia’s model in organizational contexts. In a virtual experiential exercise, we will explore how we have applied the model, and what we learned. Participants will understand how organizations are similar to, but not the same as families as well as learn strategies for facilitating organizational sculpting remotely. We will share stories and create space for triad breakouts for discussion.
Using the Satir Model to Transform Politics: A Case Study presented by Cynthia Spray, BA, Valerie McGaha, PhD, LPC, LMFT, LADC, Louis J. Vetri, MFT, MDiv, Miriam Freeman, Ph.D. (CEC)
Can you envision applying a Satir‑based approach to a political campaign? In this program we will present a case study in which one of us, Cynthia Spray, did exactly that in her campaign for the local school board in her multicultural community. We will apply the transformation process of making contact, validating, facilitating awareness, promoting acceptance, opening to new possibilities, and making change to this campaign.
Family Reconstruction 101 - Virginia’s Jewel presented by Betsy Gast, MEd (CEC)
In this workshop, aspects of the four core strategies of Family Reconstruction will be explained and modeled: family chronologies, genograms, birth fantasies and sculpting. Participants will experience ways they can use these tools to help individuals and couples gain personal insight as they explore their relationships to their parents as human beings. Participants will be asked to reflect on the impact of their own culture and family heritage at this place in history, inviting questions about the potential for being change agents. Bill Nerin’s two books on Family Reconstruction will be referenced.
Antiracism: A Satir Model for Mercy presented by Patricia Jameson, Ph.D.
This dialogic workshop will focus on Satir Hierarchical and Growth Models integrated with Relational Cultural Theory both which form the foundation for understanding systemic and interpersonal racism. Through a Satir/RCT lens, participants will be engaged in discovering new modes of interaction that focus upon how to develop and sustain congruency: through growth fostering/nurturing relationships; through mutuality, empathy and resonance; through vulnerability and openness through sharing our own stories of being marginalized, being prejudiced and being victimized, through exploring how we also have marginalized, judged and victimized others.
The Use of Virginia Satir's Part's Model in Private Practice presented by Richard Kennedy, Psy.D (CEC)
I will describe the rationale behind employing Virginia Satir’s Part model along with other forms of treatment in Private Practice. The intention is to use the concept of parts to empower an individual to become increasing aware and gain control over some of their internal voices. A particular focus will be working with individuals on the critical and shaming part of themselves. I will also discuss identifying and engaging a more positive part providing support, nurturance, and wisdom. Participants will learn how the use of this method can help clients connect with these parts independently outside of sessions providing sustained personal control of their inner processes.
Satir's Seed Model and the Internal Landscape of Whiteness presented by Del Likins, BA Contemplative Psych, Somatic Concentration, MA Marriage & Family Counseling (in progress, 2023)
This presentation offers a nuanced exploration of the harms of whiteness/white supremacy culture (named by Tema Okun and the anti-racist framework of Radical Dharma) in relationship to Satir’s human growth (Seed) mode. Join us as we explore the wounds of whiteness (the cultural default towards supremacy and domination, created and maintained in our internal, interpersonal and institutional systems) that have harmed us all, without exception, whatever our race. Learning how to address these wounds within ourselves is a crucial step to cultivating anti-oppressive dynamics as we work towards a shared longing for justice. Together we’ll consider how the Seed Model (which highlights our intrinsic ability to cope, adapt, and thrive) can help us reframe the barriers that whiteness imposes to our intrapersonal congruence, to relationships across difference, and our collective liberation.
The Complexity and Simplicity of Courtship and Healthy Couples presented by Jean McLendon, MSW (CEC)
Jean will share her understanding of how the Satir Growth Model explains the paradoxical simplicity and complexity of being in an intimate and committed couple relationship. These relationships are all cross culture and require vulnerability for intimacy. Participants will have an opportunity to reflect on Jean's presentation and explore and assess the strengths and weaknesses of their current or past coupleships.
Diagnosing Cluster B Personality Disorders presented by Carol Provo, Ph.D. (CEC)
Workshop Participants will be able to identity clients/patients with personality disorders (PD) vs. clinical syndrome (trait vs. state) and will gain practice in conceptualizing cases and diagnosing PDs in order to enhance the work (prevents missing the trait and just focusing on the state). Participants will leave workshop with tools, strategies and written materials, using the Satir Model and other techniques to assist clients/patients in the transformation back to wholeness.
Your Professional Will presented by Ann Steiner, Ph.D. (CEC)
COVID has been a wakeup call and reminder that we all, regardless of age, health and socio‑cultural location, need to have backup systems in place. Illnesses, retirement, relocation and sudden emergencies happen. How can you and your trusted team take care of your circle when emergencies happen? This workshop will help you take the first steps to create your own back up team. We will discuss how to create that team and set them up for success.
Finding and Dealing with Trauma in Therapy presented by Gundolf H. Strehl, Diplom-Psychologe, Lic. en Terapia Ocuapcional
I will discuss four therapeutic approaches that have core similarities to Virginia’s work: Emotional Focused Couples Therapy by Susan M. Johnson, the Attachment Theory by Stan Tatkin, the Betrayal Trauma Model by Dr. Omar Minwalla and the Wisdom of Trauma by Dr. Gabor Maté. What they have in common is that they work on the level of attachment wounds and an understanding of what is happening in the brain. I have found in all of my clients a childhood trauma that drives their behavior. Helping understand the childhood wounds is the first step in helping them heal so that the real self can emerge. I try to discover that Self and empower it so that my clients can live their lives from the Self and not from the trauma. My idea with this workshop is to explore the profoundness of Virginia Satir´s work and how we can enrich it with today´s scientific findings and new approaches
Enriching Your Relationship with Your Self and Others: A Personal Growth Program presented by Aznive Tossounian, BA, Communication Arts, Radio, TV and Film, Therapy, International Advanced Diploma,Clinical Hypnotherapy with Psychotherapy & Counseling Skills
"Would you like to turn the storm inside you into resources?
Straighten your life with inner peace and find your core unique spirit.?"
The workshop will concentrate on the value of each person, and the importance of a journey of discovery, not around the world but inside your inner world. And how we can accomplish the beginning of the journey, simply by meeting and making contact with your inner world. I will discuss 5 phrases that begin this journey.
Developing Your Internal Resources to Manage Life's Demands presented by Jamie Ungerleider, Ph.D., and Ross Ungerleider, MD (CEC)
We will discuss how attendees can develop their own internal resources to help them manage intra and interpersonal challenges. We will draw heavily on Satir's concepts of self, other and context as well as using her five freedoms and her self esteem toolkit, to which we have added other resources and growth tools. The experience will be both didactic and experiential. We will also relate this to our recently published book: "Discovering Your Mindful Heart: An Explorer's Guide. Developing your internal resources to manage life's demands."
